The Well-Balanced Child: Avoiding Stress and Over-Scheduling Children today live in a culture that is increasingly characterized by a “more is better” and “earlier is better” mindset, both in and out of school. This fast-paced existence for kids too often places them under undue pressure and stress, which can result in burnout, disengagement, unhealthy life patterns, or debilitating health problems. Further, over-scheduling infringes upon the most productive activity for children: unstructured play. This thought-provoking program is a must for parents seeking a healthy balance between achievement and personal fulfillment for their children.

In this presentation, you will: • Explore the unique demands placed on children’s time today • Examine how today’s high-pressure, fast-paced culture can have unintentional but damaging effects on children • Discover simple ways your family can counter the fast-paced culture without sacrificing achievement and while allowing kids to be kids

Target Audience: Parents of preschool and elementary school children

Parents and Homework: What is Your Role? If you’re like most parents, chances are you struggle at least occasionally and sometimes regularly over homework. Learn why the dynamics of homework have changed in recent years and what you can do to lessen the daily battles over it.

This presentation will provide you with: • Information on the latest trends and research on homework • Ideas for how best to support your child’s homework efforts • Tips for how to communicate and collaborate effectively with teachers about homework

Target Audience: Parents of elementary and middle school students

A Balanced Approach to Navigating Youth Sports Playing sports offers kids an undeniable wealth of benefits, from fitness and fun to life lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and effort. But with youth sports organizations now offering leagues for 4- and 5-year-olds, travel teams for 9-year-olds, and options for year-round involvement, some families find sports to be “too much of a good thing” and struggle to find a balance as they encounter the “earlier is better” and “more is better” mindset.

In this presentation, you will learn: • What kids need at each developmental stage from sports so they can build a foundation for athletic development and lifelong fitness • What youth sports experts see as an alternative to the “earlier is better” and “more is better” mindset • Guiding questions to help you balance the demands of youth sports with your family’s needs and values

Target Audience: Parents of preschool, elementary, and middle school children
